Presentation

The Junior World Affairs Council of Lake Highlands High School invites you to attend an online public talk presented via zoom. The event is free and open to anyone interested in medicine and global awareness of health and disease. Have you ever wondered about the doctors who volunteer to travel overseas to provide medical care in impoverished, poorly resourced countries? US Physician Dr. Mama will discuss his experiences, the preparation requirements for short-term medical missions and the kind of work that is being done in different countries. He will also share challenges encountered in providing care, health disparities, and cultural concepts around health and disease.


Biography:

Dr. Saifuddin Mama is a graduate of Yale University with a master of public health degree, completed his medical degree at Thomas Jefferson University and his Ob/Gyn residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He is the recipient of numerous teaching and humanism awards.

Dr. Mama’s specialties include female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, and pediatric and adolescent gynecology.

Dr. Mama has 15 years of experience in multiple yearly medical missions volunteering abroad including Africa in Niger, Ghana, Eritrea, Rwanda, and in Asia as a teaching surgeon focused on teaching and repair of obstetric fistula and complex gynecologic surgery. Dr. Mama is an elected member of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons and The American College of Surgeons. He is active in multiple national committees and continues to speak and conduct invited workshops nationally. Dr. Mama has been listed in Philadelphia Magazine's "Top Docs" for obstetrics and gynecology with recognition in adolescent gynecology and endometriosis. He has also been recognized by South Jersey Magazine's "Top Doctors for Kids" in pediatric gynecology as well as South Jersey Magazine "Top

Doctors – Obstetrics & Gynecology" every year since 2010. Dr. Mama is an elected member of the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons and The American College of Surgeons. He is active in multiple national committees and continues to speak and conduct invited workshops nationally. Dr. Mama serves on the Board of Directors of the International Organization for Women and Development, Project Team of Volunteer Doctors, and the Arden Theatre Company in Philadelphia. He is also a member of the Vision Society at Monmouth University. He speaks, English, Gujarati, and Malay. He is married to Robin Mama, PhD, Dean of the School of Social Work at Monmouth University (New Jersey) and has two adult children.


Robin Mama, PhD, LCSW is the Dean of Social Work at Monmouth University in New Jersey. Robin has travelled to Vietnam annually since the late 2000’s. She has set up partnerships and exchange programs between Monmouth’s School of Social Work and sister organizations/schools in Hanoi and Saigon. She has also mobilized her fellow Monmouth faculty members and their students to help the project TVD mission.
